The heartbeat of an organization. One can also call it the flow state of an organization.
The battle rhythm is an organizational control measure to convert individual energy and organizational chaos into an organizational heartbeat. It synergizes time, personnel, resources, critical prioritized tasks, communication and energy to meet focused objectives. It also reduces and manages uncertainty in chaotic environments. As intended, a battle rhythm is guided by a memorable organizational vision.
Supporting tasks and critical tasks are synchronized amongst the various organizational components. The synchronization is guided by the organizational vision and shared by all organizational members for purposes of shared awareness. Shared awareness is also known as situational awareness (SA).
SA is important to an organizational battle rhythm it leads toward a collective intuitive appreciation of what needs to transpire to secure organizational success. A well-honed battle rhythm allows for subordinate organizational members to replace leaders on a permanent or temporary basis as challenges or opportunities surfaces without losing momentum. Battle rhythms also provide enough organizational stability whereby subordinates can better take initiative as long as their decisions and actions are in line with the organizational vision and pulse.
Some may argue the battle rhythm is nothing more than a schedule of events; often individual in nature. Schedules are not necessarily aligned with organizational objectives, and are often unguided efforts that may not necessarily contribute to organizational success, if even individual success.
Battle rhythms create organizational synergy at an enterprise level toward and at the conscious collective level, which can become intuitive over time. As long-term objectives are achieved, or challenges surface, battle rhythms are modified as necessary to maintain organizational momentum – progress.
